Meanwhile, in Washington, investigations continue, and a series of clues emerge, pointing towards people XIII thought his allies. Can he trust Colonel Amos, General Carrington or… Lieutenant Jones?

XIII vol.4 : SPADS
Jean Van Hamme and William Vance

As the story develops in this series, it becomes more and more complex, in the style of The Prisoner. The numbers tattooed on key characters add to this resemblance, especially as the question begins to arise: “Who is Number I?"

XIII has amnesia, and may be a killer. Or, he may be disguised as a killer. Or, the killer may have been disguised as him. The plot twists and turns, centering on an assassination clearly based on the death of JFK. The complexity may confuse the casual reader, and there is no good jumping-on point other than to read from volume I through to the end.

The artwork is reminiscent of such works as Modesty Blaise, as is the pacing. The reader won’t receive quick answers, as the story unfolds over a leisurely 19 volumes. In each one, though, there is action, adventure and bloodshed enough to keep the reader’s attention.

The sex and violence are probably not too much for teens, but the intended audience is clearly adults.
